Await Further Instructions

Movie Review by Siobahn Harris

Await Further Instructions is a movie that I kept putting off, but I don’t know why I did because it was great. It’s got betrayal, racism, drama, and violence, what more could any horror fan ask for?

I think with the family drama during the holidays, Await Further Instructions could easily become the next best Christmas story. It’s right up there with How The Grinch Stole Christmas.

Break it down:

In this one, Nick (Sam Gittins) brings his girlfriend, Annji (Neerja Naik), home for the holidays. Simple. They all start so flipping simple. Unfortunately for the girlfriend, Nick’s family life is complicated. Not only is Nick estranged from his family, but his family is made up of cruel loud mouthed racists. Well, all except his mother, who seems very kind and just wants the family back together. After a rough first night, Nick and Annji decide to sneak out before anyone wakes up the next morning. Honestly, I probably would have left much earlier. The couple only makes it to the front door when they notice an issue. There is something blocking their escape, some kind of metal or something. It doesn’t take them long to realize that the weird material is covering every door and window. Soon the whole house is awake and panic sets in.

They attempt to make phone calls and go online but it seems that they’ve been cut off from the outside world. Nick’s father, Tony (Grant Masters) insists that the government is doing it for their own good. When they turn on the TV they notice that every channel says the same thing, “Stay indoors and await further instructions”. This message makes Tony believe that he is right in his belief that it is the government doing this. However, when they are instructed to throw out all their food and wash themselves with bleach, worry sets in.

Soon the instructions go from weird to worse. Nick and Annji seem to be the only ones thinking rationally, but with Tony being the head of the house, things quickly begin to spiral. They have to decide if follow all the instructions is the right thing to do, or if they should plan their escape.

My thoughts:

This movie was a weirdly twisted sort of creature feature! It was the kind of movie where you just wanted to shake everyone and hope they start doing the right thing. I spent so much time telling the screen what to do, but of course they never followed my instructions! It’s a great movie that I think many people could enjoy. I do want to point out that there are definitely gross parts of this movie, but there is very little blood. So for those who might get freaked out over blood, this is a safe watch. I think the only thing I hated about this movie was the big reveal, but I am very particular about how a creature is revealed. One wrong move and it looks cheesy, which takes me out of the movie. Unfortunately, that’s what happened here.

True Fear?

The fear of the unknown that this movie creates is beautiful. That alone gives Await Further Instructions True Fear. On top of that there are so many other things that will make your skin crawl. At one point my boyfriend grabbed my arm and closed his eyes. Honestly, that is always my favorite part about watching a horror movie with him. Like I said before, this is a weird one, but it was a really good watch. This one can be found on Netflix, so after you watch it, let me know what you thought in the comments!

  1. Great review of a movie I had never heard about before and is hiding on Netflix. It sounds like the level of suspense will keep me on the edge of my seat. Thank you for the “gore” rating, as I am definitely one of those that is not a fan of excessive blood and guts. I generally gauge whether I open my eyes on if you or one of our guys go “Aaaa…OMG….” or make any other expletives. Than I know whatever it is is pretty bad, so I should continue memorizing my palms. LOL! If I steel myself up and watch it I will definitely share my thoughts with you here.
